Baseball Drops Home Finale to Winthrop

COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team dropped its final home game of the season, 5-2, to Winthrop Tuesday night (May 12) at Founders Park.

Winthrop took the early lead in the third, putting up a pair on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single. The Gamecocks answered with a sacrifice fly from KJ Scobey to score Will Craddock in the bottom of the third.

The Eagles doubled their lead in the fourth with a two-run home run from Ethan Wilson.

Luke Yuhasz notched his fifth home run of the season, leaving the yard in the fifth for a solo shot.

Winthrop plated a run in the top of the eighth, scoring on a wild pitch, to make the final score of 5-2.

Craddock had two hits while Scobey and Yuhasz drove in the Gamecocks’ runs. Connor Chicoli, who had the start, took the loss on the night, giving up seven hits and four runs in 3.2 innings pitched.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Alex Philpott did not allow a run in the final 1.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
  • The Gamecocks had 234,129 fans in the 36 home games.
  • Scobey now leads the Gamecocks with 34 RBI on the season.
