Andrews Helps U.S. to U18 AmeriCup Gold

IRAPUATO, Mexico – South Carolina women’s basketball incoming freshman Kelsi Andrews helped the United States its 12th-straight gold at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup in Irapuato, Mexico, with a 90-72 win over Canada. The future Gamecock averaged 6.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 12.2 minutes per game in the tournament.

After storming through group play, the U.S. dominated Venezuela 104-51 in semifinal action on Sunday. Andrews posted her first double-double of the tournament in that outing, needing just 14 minutes to put up 13 points and 10 rebounds, including four offensive, and shot 6-of-9 from the field.

In the gold medal game Monday night, cold shooting had the U.S. down early but the Americans fought their way back to a narrow 24-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. The teams went back and forth early in the second before the U.S. used a 9-0 run to surge ahead by 12 at 41-29 with under five minutes left in the half. Leading by 16 at the half, the Americans held of the scrappy Canadians, who drew within single digits with 4:07 to play before an Andrews fast break layup moments later put the U.S. back up by 10,

The gold medal is Andrews’ third with USA Basketball, adding this one to her titles at the 2024 FIBA U17 World Cup and the 2023 FIBA U16 AmeriCup.
