Makeer, Canada Advance to Olympic Qualifying Tournaments

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball sophomore Agot Makeer played in all five games for Canada at the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico, last week. Her 8.2 points per game and 56.3 percent field goal shooting helped her home country capture the only available spot in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2028.

The tournament was Makeer’s first with Canada’s senior national team, and she got better as the event went on, posting double-digit points in the semis and finals. The Gamecock guard played 14.0 minutes per game at the event and her 56.3 percent shooting was second-best on the squad.

After Canada dominated group play, it faced New Zealand in the semifinals. Makeer came off the bench to shoot 5-of-7 from the field for her first game in double-figure points at 11, adding two assists and two rebounds in her 17 minutes on the court. Sunday’s final was a rematch of Canada’s tightest group play result against host Mexico. With a spot in the next round of Olympic Qualifying on the line, the visitors left no doubt in an 83-53 win. Makeer’s 13 points were second on the team and again came on 5-of-7 shooting to go along with three assists and three rebounds.
