No. 16 Gamecocks Pick Up Points on the Road
BATON ROUGE, LA – The No. 16-ranked Gamecocks (8-1-0, 2-0-0) picked up three points and their first SEC road win of the season Friday night, defeating LSU 3-1. The win marked South Carolina’s seventh consecutive victory, the longest streak of any team in the conference so far this season. The three goals were the most for the Gamecocks against the Tigers since scoring the same in the 2016 season (Sept. 22, 3-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED / NOTABLES
- Possession remained with the Gamecocks for the majority of the first 10 minutes of the game, until a shot from a Tiger gave LSU a chance, but was met by a save from South Carolina keeper Christina Tsaousis
- Senior transfer Maryn Wolf gave the Gamecocks their first look of the night, tracking on target but the shot came off wide
- A foul on LSU’s Kelsey Major set up a penalty kick for South Carolina in the 30th minute. Sophomore Ava Tutas stepped up to the spot, sinking it past the keeper to put the Gamecocks up 1-0
- Just two minutes into the second half, an additional foul in the box granted the Gamecocks another PK. The shot was taken by senior Cuyler Zulauf, but was unsuccessful after a clearance from the Tigers following a bounce off the keeper
- In the 64th minute, LSU’s Berglind Hlynsdottir headed one in off a corner to find the 1-1 equalizer for the Tigers
- Less than 10 minutes later, a Tiger foul set up a free kick for the Gamecocks, taken by Reese Slater, who sent in a rocket from well outside the 18 to the top right of the net to put South Carolina back on top 2-1. It was Slater’s third goal in just as many games, previously scoring against Charleston (Sept. 6) and Florida (Sept. 10). The goal also marked the second game-winner in a row for the senior.
- With nine minutes to go, a handball called on LSU inside the box gave South Carolina their third PK of the game, taken again by Tutas. The sophomore stayed a perfect 2-for-2 on the night after connecting her shot to make things 3-1. It was her third PK of the season and her third make.
- South Carolina stepped up the offensive presence in the half, outshooting the Tigers 11-3 in the final 45 minutes of play. The Gamecocks finished with 16 (8) shots to LSU’s 7 (2)
- The Gamecocks have now outscored opponents 20-6
- The 12 corners marked a new season high for South Carolina, and were the fourth-most taken in a game in program history
