Peyton Williams Has a Different Kind of Cover in His Future

by Brad Muller

Whether it’s Cover 2 or man to man coverage, South Carolina fifth year senior defensive back Peyton Williams is accustomed to any sort of pass coverage on the gridiron, but when his playing days are over, the Texas native might be undercover. Williams, who already has his degree in criminal justice, is interested in joining the FBI someday.

“My dad and my stepmother are in law enforcement,” Williams said. “They’re police officers in Louisiana. They know some people that are in the FBI that have said pretty good things about it.

“It’s tough. You definitely have to be smart and dedicated. It’s long hours. The recruitment process is very long. When you get recruited and accepted, then you go to train, and that’s also super-long. I know it’s going to take a lot of dedication.”

Some of that sounds similar to his path in becoming a football player in the SEC.

“I’ve been recruited,” Williams said. “I had to go through the training process every year, so it’s going to help a lot because it’s already set in me with the habits I need to have to be successful.”

As one of the older players in the defensive backs room, Williams knows he has to take on a leadership role.

“Definitely somebody the younger guys can come to.” Williams said. “We have a lot of freshmen and a lot of new transfers. Anytime anyone needs any help or any guidance, I’m the guy.

“One of my individual strengths is my accountability. I feel like I’m one of the most accountable guys on the team, so I can hold other guys accountable. It’s important if you’re going to hold somebody accountable, you have to be accountable yourself.”

Williams isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. He finished high school a semester early and had actually started his collegiate career in the spring when most of his friends back home were making plans for the prom.

Fast-forward four years and Williams took another big leap by getting engaged.

“I bought the ring in December,” Williams said. “I called my mom, and said I’ve got the ring. We have to figure out how we’re going to do this.”

Members of both families were in California, so he planned a trip there and popped the question on the beach in Malibu.

“She had no idea what was going on!” Williams said.

The start of this season also presented some challenges for Williams and his teammates, but he said the key for them is simply staying together.

“These past two losses make us come together,” Williams said. “It makes us stronger as a family because we truly are a family.”
