Jay Spearman

Sophomore cornerback who is looking for an injury-free campaign… hampered by shoulder problems since his arrival in Columbia, including missing the 2010 spring drills… has shown some athleticism and tests well in the weight room.

2009: Saw action in three games on special teams… did not record any statistics… did not participate in the preseason camp while recovering from shoulder surgery.

2008: Redshirted… did not practice as he recovered from shoulder surgery… enrolled in January and went through spring drills until injuring the shoulder.

HIGH SCHOOL: Graduated in December 2007 from Greenwood (S.C.) High where he played quarterback for Coach Shell Dula… racked up 1,300 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns while leading his team to an 11-2 record as a senior… earned first-team All-State honors from The State… played in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas… named to the All-Atlantic Region team by PrepStar magazine… as a junior, he rushed for 1,111 yards and 17 TDs and threw for 1,108 yards and seven scores, helping Greenwood to the AAAA Division II state title… a three-star prospect, Rivals.com considered him the 59th-best ‘athlete’ in the country and the 18th-best player in the state of South Carolina… also considered Clemson, Maryland and Nebraska.

PERSONAL: Jay Spearman was born December 8, 1989… uncle is former Gamecock Andray Spearman, who lettered from 1996-98… pursuing a degree in anthropology.
