Katie Wood Bio
Wood joins the Gamecocks as a freshman. She is passionate for running and excited for the opportunity to further her cross country and track career. In high school, she competed in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track at Mills Godwin. She was a 12-letter varsity athlete. In cross country, Wood was a member of the All-District team in 2009 and 2011 as well as the All-Region team in 2011. She was also a member of the Academic All-District team in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and the Academic All-Region team in 2010 and 2011. Wood served as a captain for the cross country team her senior year, helping to lead her team to the Colonial District title, the first in school history. Her team qualified for the Virginia state meet in 2010 and 2011, while she also individually qualified in 2011. Wood is the fifth fastest cross country runner in school history, with a personal best of 19:20 for the 5K. Her team awarded her with the Most Dedicated award her junior and senior year.
On the track, Wood earned All-District status in indoor in 2010, 2011 and 2012 as well as outdoor in 2010 and 2011. She was also All-Region once in indoor in 2011 for the 4×800-meter relay and once again in outdoor in 2011 for the 3,200-meter run. She was a member of the Academic All-District team in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and the Academic All-Region team in 2010 and 2011. At the 2011 Central Region Championships, she placed sixth in the 3,200 and qualified for the Virginia state meet. In this race, she also ran her personal best of 11:38. Shortly after, Wood was sidelined with plantar fasciitis for the remainder of her senior year.
Wood was a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. She plans on pursuing a career as a high school teacher and cross country/track coach. She is the daughter of Cliff and Kristen Wood. She has a younger brother, Will (15), who is a freshman currently competing in high school cross country.
