John Stephenson

John Stephenson

John Stephenson joined the South Carolina Athletics staff as an Associate Athletics Director for Compliance in January 2025.

Stephenson comes to Carolina after most recently serving on Florida Atlantic’s staff. He joined the FAU compliance department in 2019 as an Associate AD and served on the executive staff. He was elevated to Senior Associate AD in 2022. He was a sport supervisor for the Owls’ tennis programs and led their NIL program.

Prior to FAU, Stephenson served as the director of compliance at Florida State from September 2017 until September 2019. He oversaw compliance areas of Financial Aid (Bylaw 15) and Awards and Benefits (Bylaw 16) for FSU Athletics.

Stephenson also logged stints at Indiana, North Carolina and East Carolina.

Stephenson is a member of the National Association for Athletics Compliance, Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, American Bar Association, Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association, the Missouri Bar, Professional Tennis Registry and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.

A native of Fayetteville, N.C., Stephenson received his Bachelor of Science in recreational sports management from North Carolina Central University where he was a member of the men’s tennis team. He later acquired Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration degrees from North Carolina Central. He is a 2018 graduate of the NCAA Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute and a 2023 graduate of the Sports Management Institute Executive Program.
