Gamecock Sports Science: Mental Health and Sport Performance

A Culture of Care: Complete medical, physical, mental and emotional care for South Carolina student-athletes

Who We Are

What We Do

  • Mental Health Counseling Toggle content

All staff are licensed practitioners within their disciplines and trained in individual counseling. Because college is a time of multi-layered transitions and competing in D1 sports can be intense, we are available to talk with student-athletes about any of the issues they face as a member of USC Athletics. Some of the common problems encountered are adjustment to college life, struggles with roommates, relationships, gaining independence from families, academic problems, mood, anxiety, substance, eating, or sleep issues, and how to communicate better with teammates or coaches. We maintain a high level of confidentiality in accordance with state and federal laws, professional ethical standards, and NCAA Mental Health Best Practices.

  • Psychological Evaluations Toggle content

Testing for ADHD and learning differences is available as we make every effort to help our student-athletes to be academically successful while being compliant with NCAA rules. We may also request testing to assist with complex diagnostic issues. Our psychologist works closely with our psychiatrist and the UofSC Student Disability Resource Center for accommodations as needed

  • Medication Management Toggle content

We have a board-certified, licensed psychiatrist available to assist student-athletes with any psychiatric medications they may take when they come to campus or to evaluate and prescribe medications as needed for any newly diagnosed mental health symptoms.

  • Sport Performance Counseling Toggle content

Our staff is also trained in helping individual student-athletes with any sport performance struggles they may encounter. Topics may include anxiety and energy management, confidence, goal setting, motivation, concentration, self-talk, and using imagery. These sessions are also confidential. Additionally, we may be asked by coaches to assist with team building, communication, and performance.

  • Education and Outreach Toggle content

The Mental Health and Performance professionals are available to talk with teams and smaller groups on topics of interest related to mental health awareness and sport performance upon request. We also have educational resources and materials available for use by staff and students.

  • Referrals Toggle content

In the event that we are not able to accommodate the needs of a student-athlete for any reason, we are available to assist with referrals.
