Columbia, S.C. – Lisa Jones scored two goals including a game-winner in the second overtime as Arkansas (5-9, 1-2 SEC) defeated the South Carolina (9-4, 2-2 SEC) women’s soccer team 2-1 on Friday evening at Stone Stadium. Carolina concludes the weekend on Sunday afternoon vs. LSU at 1 p.m.
“It’s disappointing to lose tonight and we had our chances to win the game,” said head coach Shelley Smith. “Arkansas did a good job of capitalizing on our mistakes.” The Lady Backs got on the scoreboard first at 40:23 near the end of the first half as Jones scored her first goal of the night off a rebound from Carolina goalkeeper Elise Matthews.
Carolina stormed back in the early part of the second half and knotted the match at one, with Jess Julin scoring her third goal of the season. USC sophomore defender Sarah Lentz found a cutting Julin in the penalty box and Julin was able to put away a five-yard shot to the left corner, tying the math at 1-1.
The two teams remained scoreless until the second overtime when the Lady Backs entered the South Carolina zone with Jones scoring from 10 yards out to the left corner past USC goalkeeper Carolyn Ortega to seal the victory for Arkansas. Julie Williford earned an assist for Arkansas on the goal.
Carolina finished the evening with a 15-13 shot advantage. Ortega entered the mach in goal for USC in the second half and had four saves to lead the Gamecocks. Ortega’s record in goal is 2-1 on the season.
