Chapel Hill, North Carolina – The South Carolina women’s golf team is in a tie for sixth place after the first round of the Franklin Street Trust Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Lady Gamecocks are just 10 strokes back of the lead held by the 2001-02 National Champion Duke. The Lady Gamecocks fired a team score of 12-over par 300 on Friday.

Defending SEC Champion senior Kristy McPherson leads the way for the Lady Gamecocks firing a one-under par 71. McPherson is in a tie for fifth place with four other players who all are four strokes back of the lead. Senior Kacy Thompson shot a three-over par 75 in her opening round, placing her in a tie for 21st place.

Junior Kory Thompson shot a four-over par 76 on Friday. Junior Adrienne Gautreaux and sophomore Tiffany Catafygiotu (playing as an individual only) each shot a 78 and are tied for 50th place. Junior Marci Robinson rounds out the Lady Gamecocks scoring with a 13-over par 85, and is in 79th place.

Duke leads the field with a team score of 290. Tournament host North Carolina is in second place with a 296, followed by Ohio State with a 297. Tulane and Oklahoma State round out the top five in a tie for fourth place, each with a score of 299.

Liz Janangelo of Duke leads the individual field with a score of four-under par 67. Leigh Turner of Furman is in second place with a three-under par 68. Kristin Tamulis of Florida State and Amelie Farrah of North Carolina Wilmington are tied for third place with a score of two-under par 70. McPherson and four other girls round out the top five.

The tournament starts up again on Saturday with tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m.
