COLUMBIA, S.C. – Former South Carolina forward Demetress Adams (2006-09) has signed a training camp contract with the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream. The 2008 Second-Team All-SEC selection will compete for one of the 11 spots on the Dream’s roster for the 2010 season. Adams spent the 2009-10 season playing in Spain.
Adams closed her Gamecock career in 2009 ranked among the program’s top 10 in career blocked shots (3rd, 140), field goal percentage (8th, .535) offensive rebounds (4th, 274) and defensive rebounds (4th, 462). She holds the school record for rebounds and defensive rebounds in a game with 26 and 17, respectively, against Arkansas on Feb. 3, 2008 – a mark that also tied the most by a player in the SEC since the league began sponsoring women’s basketball in 1982-83. She earned Second-Team All-SEC honors and a spot on the SEC All-Defensive team as a junior and was on the SEC All-Freshman team in 2005-06. A knee injury shortened her senior campaign, leaving her just 23 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau.
Since recovering from that injury, Adams has played in the Liga Femenina 2 in Spain, first for Iberconsulting Cáceres and most recently for Arranz-Jopisa Burgos. Playing for Iberconsulting Cáceres, Adams averaged 16.6 points and 9.1 rebounds while shooting 58.9 percent from the field over her 14 games. She quickly established herself as a prime commodity in the league with a 31-point, 15-rebound, five-block effort against Leon on Oct. 18. Those numbers led her to Arranz-Jopisa Burgos in late January as the club needed to shore up its interior game as it made a push for promotion to Liga Femenina, the top level of women’s basketball in Spain. Through her first seven games, Adams is posting 6.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game on 55.6 percent shooting. One of her first games with the new club was a solid 15-point, 12-rebound, four-block effort against Pio XII on Feb. 1.
