Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina’s Jordan Quinn headed in a corner kick late in the first half, and the third-ranked Gamecocks made it stand as the game-winner as they defeated the University of Evansville men’s soccer team 1-0 today in the final round of the ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic in Evansville, Ind. Both South Carolina and Fresno State finished 1-0-1 in the tournament, and Fresno won the tournament championship based on the fourth tie-breaker-most goals scored (3 to 1).
The Gamecocks’ defense stepped-up this weekend by not allowing one goal during the tournament. On Saturday, USC battled Louisville to a scoreless tie. South Carolina(7-0-1) extends its unbeaten streak to eight, making the 2002 season the third best start in USC history.
Sunday’s only goal came at 42:19 when South Carolina’s Jack Cummings sent a corner kick in front of the net. Quinn used his 6-foot-3 frame to go up high and head the ball past Evansville goalkeeper Ed Moore. South Carolina dominated the first half, outshooting Evansville 7-1.
Gamecock goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer recorded his fourth shutout of the season.
Defender Jordan Smith was named the Pro-rehab-Aces Classic Defensive Most Valuable Player. Defender Tim Glowienka and forward Jordan Quinn joined Smith on the all-tournament team.
The Gamecocks return to action on Sunday, Sept. 29 when they travel to Davidson College for their final match of September. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
