BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 20 UAB in Conference USA action on Wednesday night. The loss drops Carolina’s overall record to 7-6-3, including a 2-2-2 mark in conference play, while the Blazers improve to 11-3-1, with a 5-1-1 mark in league action.
UAB held a 15-7 upperhand in shots in the match, including a 7-4 upperhand in shots on frame. Junior midfielder Blake Brettschneider led Carolina with three shots in the match and senior forward Bryan Lowder contributed two.
Forward Anthony King led the Blazer attack, posting four shots, while scoring the game winner in the 38th minute. Two-Boys Gumede and Babayele Sodade each added a goal in the second half for the final 3-0 score.
In net for Carolina, goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer collected a game-high four saves, while UAB goalkeepers Carl Woszczynski and Wes Johnson combined for the shutout.
King collected the game winner on a double-assist from Bart Markel and Kofi Gyawu in the 38th minute, giving the Blazers the upperhand entering the halftime intermission.
Gumede added UAB’s second goal midway through the second half and Sodade pushed the lead to 3-0 with a tally in the 76th minute.
South Carolina returns home to host Marshall on Senior Night this Saturday at Stone Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
