CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – South Carolina senior Diego Cubas continued his march through the singles bracket at the ITA/Wilson Carolinas Regional Sunday at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, picking up a pair of wins to advance to Monday’s 10 a.m. semifinal against North Carolina’s Jose Hernandez. Teamed with sophomore Ivan Machado, Cubas’ run in the doubles bracket came to end in the semifinal, however, as the duo fell to Wake Forest’s Iain Atkinson and Steve Forman.

Cubas, ranked 28th in the nation and seeded second in this event, has been on a tear all weekend in Chapel Hill, and he kept the momentum Sunday morning with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Campbell’s Davy Sum. Facing his first ranked opponent of the season in the quarterfinals, Cubas overcame a tie-breaker loss in the second set to push past North Carolina’s Stefan Hardy 6-1, 6-7 (1), 6-2 to earn his spot in the semifinals.

In doubles action, Cubas and Machado got into the semifinals when Wake Forest’s duo of David Hopkins and Carlos Salmon had to withdraw due to illness. The Gamecocks’ top tandem, ranked ninth in the country, were solid throughout the semifinal against the Demon Deacon duo Atkinson and Forman, stumbling late to drop the 7-9 decision.
