NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The South Carolina men’s golf team recorded a six-over 286 in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA East Regional on the Course at Yale University on Thursday afternoon. The squad is tied for 10th, just five shots out of the important fifth-place spot, with two rounds left to play.

A trio of Gamecocks shot one-over 71s on the day, tying with 11 other players for 29th in the first round. Seniors George Bryan IV and Paul Woodbury along with sophomore Wesley Bryan all posted 71s, getting there in different ways. The elder Bryan birdied the opening hole before running off 11-straight pars. A pair of bogeys was followed by five straight pars to close out the round.

Woodbury had a pair of birdies to balance out his front nine before getting to one-under with a birdie on 13. A double bogey on the 17th knocked Woodbury back to over par for the round. The younger Bryan brother had a tough fourth hole, but he came back to get a birdie on six before making 11-straight pars. A birdie on the 18th gave Wesley Bryan the one-over.

Freshman Clint Tolleson finished with a three-over 73 on the day, posting 15 pars as the final team scorer. Senior Patrick Rada scuffled to a seven-over 77 but posted two birdies on the back nine.

Texas leads the event with a six-under 274, while Penn State and Kent State are tied for second at 277 (-3). East Tennessee State is fourth at 278 (-2), with Alabama holding fifth at 281 (+1). UCLA and Virginia stand at 282 (+2), and Charlotte and Vanderbilt are tied for eighth at 285 (+5). South Carolina is tied with UNC Wilmington, with Southeastern Louisiana (+8), Columbia (+9) and Lafayette (+27) closing out the field.

The Gamecocks get the second round underway at 8:50 a.m. EDT, paired against UNC Wilmington and Southeastern Louisiana.
