COLUMBIA, S.C. – On Thu., July 23, University of South Carolina student-athletes participated in Richland 101 for Kids, an annual event that takes place each summer to give area youth a chance to learn about Richland County. The event, held at Dutch Square Mall in Columbia, was attended by over 1,000 youth aged 5-12. Student-athletes from South Carolina women’s basketball, softball and track and field were in attendance at the event.

“This event is a great experience and an excellent chance for kids to learn about the county they live in have a good time with their peers,” junior women’s basketball player Samone Kennedy said after spending time shooting hoops with the kids in attendance.

Junior Jewel May, also a member of the women’s basketball team, agreed with Kennedy, “It’s always fun to get out in Columbia and meet future Gamecocks and have the opportunity to interact with the community as a person and not just a basketball player.”

This is the second year that South Carolina Athletics has participated in this event where local non-profit groups and area businesses get together to encourage the kids involved to explore fitness, arts and the history of Richland County.

“It’s a good experience to let the kids come out and have a good time, and it’s always good to be able to give back to the community since they support the Gamecocks all year round,” said Kandyce Redondo of the South Carolina softball team.
