Columbia, S.C. – The No. 5 University of South Carolina men’s soccer team fell to No. 4 Clemson, 2-1, in double overtime, at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium in front 4,868 fans. Clemson improves to 7-1-1, while Carolina drops to 7-2-1.
At 31:13 Tiger Andre Borges served the ball into the box where Dimelon Westfield knocked it to the upper right corner of the net, giving Clemson a 1-0 lead.
USC answered the Tigers’ goal in the 37th minute when sophomore Anthony Stovall netted his second goal of the year. JC Desriac connected with freshman Lawson Vaughn to set up Stovall. The Columbia, S.C., native slipped the ball past Tiger goalkeeper Doug Warren for the Gamecocks’ equalizing goal. The match would go into halftime knotted at 1-1.
In the second half South Carolina dominated play, outshooting the Tigers 5-1. Both teams were unable to score, which sent the match into overtime. In the second overtime period, Gamecock goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer made a great save on a bullet from Steven Rhyne. Bachmeyer deflected the ball into a flurry of players in the box and Westfield managed to knock in his second goal of the match at 101:47.
South Carolina goalkeeper Michael Bachmeyer posted five saves, while Doug Warren tallied six. USC outshot the Tigers 12-8 and had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
“I thought our team did a great job,” commented Head Coach Mark Berson. “I was very proud at the fact that we had some young players who saw a lot more playing time then they had in the past and they really stepped up.”
The Gamecocks return to action Friday, Oct. 11 when they head to Wake Forest for a 7:00 p.m. kick off.
