COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley announced that Brittany Webb (St. Michael Academy) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University and play basketball for the Gamecocks. She will have four years of eligibility beginning with the 2009-10 academic year.

“Brittany is a prototype SEC power forward with unlimited potential,” Staley said. “Her ability to score on the block and court vision give us an added dimension to our team. Brittany comes from nationally-ranked St. Michael Academy in New York, where she is coached by her AAU coach Apache Paschall, who has prepared her for the fierce competition of the SEC.”

A 6-foot-4 center from St. Michael Academy in New York, Webb has helped the Eagles to a 78-11 record in her three seasons and is rated the 16th-best center in the 2010 class by ESPN Hoop Gurlz. St. Michael was a perfect 12-0 in Catholic League play last season en route to a 25-3 overall record. Webb was an ESPN Rise All-NY Metro Fourth-Team selection in 2009 after helping the Eagles to CHSAA Class AA and NYSFSSAA titles.

South Carolina unofficially opens its 2009-10 season tonight with a 7 p.m. exhibition against Augusta State at Colonial Life Arena. Admission to the game is free. The Gamecocks play their season opener on Mon., Nov. 16, at Charlotte.
