COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior forward Kacie Brewer was named to the 2009 SEC Community Service Team and two other Gamecocks were selected as CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performers of the Week for their play at the SEC Tournament last week.
Senior defender Blakely Mattern and sophomore forward Kayla Grimsley both earned their second selections this week to the CollegeSoccer360.com list for their roles in leading South Carolina to its first SEC Tournament title.
Brewer has been one of the most active community service members for South Carolina the past four years and has continued to serve while preparing to earn her bachelor’s degree and attend graduate school. Most recently, Brewer has worked and helped coordinate events for Special Needs Children & Adults in Columbia. In the summer, she works as a volunteer at the Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Brewer also participates in numerous youth soccer clinics in the Columbia area and spends time speaking to middle school and high school students about the responsibility of being a student-athlete. She has been a member of SAAC for three years.
Mattern and Grimsley both scored late tying goals in Carolina’s comeback victories against Georgia and LSU during the tournament. Grimsley’s goal with 10 minutes remaining against the Bulldogs tied the match before she assisted Kortney Rhoades’s game winning goal in the 89th minute. Mattern hit the game-tying goal in the championship match with two minutes remaining and was named Tournament MVP.
