Today we begin a series of profiles on the University of South Carolina men’s and women’s golf teams. First up is freshman Sam Braver.

Sam is a product of Centennial High School in Roswell, Ga. He was a two-time all-state selection while in high school, and earned honorable mention All-America honors from the American Junior Golf Association in 2007. He was inducted into the Centennial High School Hall of Fame following his career after helping his team to a third-place finish in the 5A state tournament as a sophomore. He won three AJGA national events and is a two-time Future Masters champion.

What has been your proudest moment as a Gamecock?
Signing with the University of South Carolina.

What convinced you to come to school at USC in the first place?
Coach McDonald was definitely a big factor in my decision to become a Gamecock. Having the opportunity to learn under a coach who has already experienced it cannot be summed up in words.

What are you most looking forward to in your USC career?
I am looking forward to helping my team make a truly possible run for a National Championship in the near future and being able to graduate this great University with a degree in Business.

What are you most excited about regarding the upcoming spring season?
I am excited to get the chance to help my fellow teammates take this program to new heights.

Describe your “perfect” day (whether it involves golf or not).
My perfect day would include a little golf and a lot of rest and relaxation (preferably near the water).

Favorite course you’ve ever played? (Why?)
My favorite course would have to be the North Course at The Gallery in Tucson, AZ. I love how the course is designed around the mountains that surround it and that there isn’t a blade a grass on the course that hasn’t been manicured perfectly.

Most memorable round of golf (USC or otherwise)?
My last week of junior golf at the Canon Cup. Getting the chance to scream, yell, and paint up on the golf course will always be memorable to me.

To which pro golfer would you compare your game?
I would compare my game to Freddy Couples because I enjoy being laid back and able to think freely on the golf course.

Who is your favorite golfer to watch compete?
I love watching Ernie Els play because his swing looks so effortless. He is able to remain smooth and calm under any circumstance.

What is your best shot/skill?
My ability to drive the ball around the golf course is my best skill because I normally am able to keep the ball in the short grass and I not afraid to knock it out there.

How do Coach McDonald and Coach Blackmon inspire you?
All the coaches here at South Carolina allow me to challenge myself in every aspect of the game. Only after one semester here, I feel that my game has already taken a giant leap in the right direction.
