COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s soccer team has earned the fifth seed in the Southeastern Conference Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Georgia Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m (CT). in the quarterfinal match. The SEC Tournament is held at the Orange Beach Soccer Complex in Orange Beach, Ala.
South Carolina (11-5-4, 5-4-2 SEC) tied a program-best by finishing third in the tough SEC Eastern division. Georgia (9-9-1, 7-3-1 SEC) finished second in the SEC East and fourth in the overall SEC standings. The Gamecocks advance to their third consecutive SEC Tournament under Coach Shelley Smith, whose team has improved in the conference standings each of the past three seasons after finishing fifth in the East in 2006 and fourth in the East in 2007.
The Gamecocks hold a 1-6-1 overall record in six appearances in the SEC Tournament, but they have advanced to the semifinal round each of the past two seasons. South Carolina drew Vanderbilt 1-1 in 2006 before advancing with a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks. The Gamecocks defeated Tennessee 2-0 in last season’s quarterfinal match.
South Carolina and Georgia played to a 1-1 tie in the regular season this season when freshman Natalie Aaron scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute. The winner of the Carolina-Georgia match will face the winner of the Florida-Alabama match at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. The SEC Championship match is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m.
