ATHENS, Ga. – The South Carolina equestrian team dropped a 13-7 decision to Georgia in the fall season finale as the Bulldogs remain undefeated at the Animal Science Complex in their four years at the facility. Rebekah Roof had an MVP ride in reining to lead the Gamecocks.

Roof defeated Sarah Locker 74.5-73.5 for the high score of the day in reining to earn the MVP honor. Overall, the Gamecock Hunter Seat team dropped a 6-4 decision while the Western team dropped a 7-3 decision.

The Gamecocks won equitation over fences with winning rides by Carly Babcock, Sarah Stephens and Victoria Middleton on a day where scores above 70 were hard to come by on both sides. Babcock earned a 68-67 victory, Stephens defeated Daisy Whelan 65-57 and Middleton edged Michelle Morris 70-66. In equitation on the flat, Nicole Bourgeois had the only victory for the Gamecocks with an 83-81 ride over Kacy Jenkins.

The Roof sisters led Carolina in reining with Lydia Roof recording a 74-73 victory against Nichole Grant to go with Rebekah’s MVP ride. The two Lexington natives had the two highest scores in the event. The other Gamecock to post a victory on the Western team was Hailey Thornton, whose 74.5 in horsemanship was strong enough to defeat Kelley Mundrick.

“We had a disappointing fall season but we have time to work on things before the spring , so we will focus on that,” South Carolina head coach Boo Major said.

The Gamecocks fall to 1-4 on the year. The Hunter Seat team is 2-3 while the Western team is 1-4. Carolina returns to the ring Saturday, January 24 when the team travels for their first meeting against UT-Martin.
