BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – South Carolina midfielder Lindsay Small has been named to the SEC Community Service Team, as announced Friday by the league office. Small participated in numerous community service projects during 2008 around the Columbia area, including participating in Habitat for Humanity by helping paint new homes in addition to volunteering at the Harvest Hope Food Bank and at the Ronald McDonald House for charity.

Pursuing a degree in nursing, Small thrives in helping her community, especially in working with area youth. She has worked as a guest speaker at Lexington county middle schools on the subjects of health, athletics and education. She has also volunteered at area youth soccer clubs to teach kids basic soccer fundamentals. Recently, Small volunteered at the 2008 EdVenture HalloWonka event for kids at the South Carolina State Museum, offering a safe environment for children to enjoy a week of arts, crafts and games throughout the week of Halloween.

The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 20 league sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.

Small (Suffield, Conn.) has had a career season for the Gamecocks, starting all 21 matches and registering three goals and one assist for seven points. Small was named to the Soccer America national team of the week earlier in the year after hitting the game-winning goals against Boston University and in-state rival Clemson in addition to being named the Carolina’s Cup Tournament MVP in early September.
