KINGSTON, R.I. – South Carolina used a dominating offense to take a 3-0 sweep over Boston College, 25-10, 25-16, 25-15, in the first match on Friday in the Art Carmichael Classic in Keaney Gymnasium. The Gamecocks move to 3-1 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 2-2.
Junior outside hitter Ivana Kujundzic nearly had her third double-double, making 11 digs and eight kills in the match. She also set a career high with five service aces. Senior middle blocker Belita Salters and sophomores Annie Thomas and Megan Laughlin all had seven kills and hit above .400. Thomas led that group with a .583 percentage. Junior Sarah Cline and sophomore Hannah Lawing both contributed six digs. Jordan Meredith led Boston College with 11 kills.
South Carolina dominated the first set, getting runs of seven, five and four at different points in the 25-10 win. Laughlin had three kills, two aces and two block assists in the frame to lead the Gamecocks. Kujundzic was a perfect 2-for-2 while also getting six digs and a service ace. As a team, the Garnet and Black hit .381 and had three aces and four blocks.
The second set was much like the first, as the Gamecocks were credited with hitting .357 (14-4-28) in the 25-16 triumph. South Carolina broke the game open after being down, 8-7. They took seven of the next eight points, with aces from sophomore setter Jordan Bradosky and Kujundzic coming in the stretch. Thomas had three kills, one solo and one assisted block in the set, while Kujundzic had four kills and an ace.
In the third, the Carolina Gamecocks got out to leads of 5-1 and 18-11 before closing out with a 25-15 victory. The Gamecocks shared the ball while hitting .500 in the frame, as five different players had two kills each. Kujundzic had three aces, three digs and two kills in the final frame. Lawing and Cline also had three digs in the final set.
The Gamecocks face host Rhode Island in the final match of the day of the Art Carmichael Classic at 7 p.m.
