COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of South Carolina athletics’ spirit squads had yet another successful showing at the 2009 National Cheerleaders Association/National Dance Alliance Collegiate Championship the past weekend in Daytona Beach, Fla.

South Carolina mascot Cocky headlined the group by winning the NCA Collegiate Stunt & Mascot Championship on Saturday. Cocky’s final score of 9.15 edged second-place finisher Sammy The Bearcat from Sam Houston State University by 0.28 points.

The Gamecocks took fourth place in the All Girl 1 Division with a score of 8.889. It was an improvement of six spots from where the team finished a year ago.

Erika Goodwin, who is in her fourth year as head cheerleading coach and spirit coordinator, coaches South Carolina. She is a 1999 graduate of the University.
