FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The South Carolina equestrian team ended its regular season with its first two road victories of the year after defeating Sacred Heart, 15-3, Sunday at Lion Hill Farm. The Gamecocks (7-4) defeated Delaware State on the road Saturday before heading to Fairfield, Conn., for Sunday’s competition.

Three Gamecocks earned MVP honors Sunday. Kristen Terebesi recorded her ninth MVP ride of the season after taking a win in equitation on the flat. Allison Bradley notched her third MVP ride of the season and her first in reining. Amy Biffle grabbed her second MVP ride of the weekend in horsemanship, taking the honors against Delaware State and Sacred Heart.

“We had a good day,” South Carolina head coach Boo Duncan said. “Everyone was tired after yesterday, but we had very few mistakes that were made. As a whole we did well and I was pleased with our performance, especially with our Western team doing very well.”

The Hunter Seat team improved to 8-3 on the year after taking an 8-2 victory Sunday against the Patriots. In equitation on the flat, Terebesi, Sarah Stephens, Carly Babcock and Luci Laffitte all earned wins for Carolina. The win was the first of the year for Laffitte while Stephens continues her strong year by improving to 7-2-1. Carolina also earned four wins in equitation over fences, courtesy of Terebesi, Megan Massaro, Katie Stenberg and Eleanor Kunsman. Terebesi improves to 9-2 over fences while Stenberg evens her record after winning her last two rides.

The Western team improved to 6-5 on the year with a 7-1 victory Sunday after both team rode only four riders in both horsemanship and reining. Carolina recorded its first sweep in horsemanship this year, taking wins from Bradley, Biffle, Stacy Cell and Emily Bookwalter. The ride and win were the first of the season for Cell. In reining, Bradley, Biffle and Kyla Thurlow all recorded wins for the Gamecocks. Bradley improves to 7-3 in the event while Thurlow recorded her first win of the spring season.

South Carolina will next compete when they host the Southern Equestrian Championships at One Wood Farm from March 28-29. The competition between USC, Georgia and Auburn will begin Friday when the soon to be named No. 2 and No. 3 seeds compete. The winner will take on the No. 1 seed on Saturday, which will also be South Carolina’s Senior Day festivities.

The Varsity Equestrian National Championships will then be held in Waco, Texas, from April 14-19 where the Gamecocks will defend their 2007 national championship. Coach Duncan’s team has also won thee past three Hunter Seat national championships.
