South Carolina, celebrating its 100th season of Gamecock basketball, hosts Campbell after nearly a week in the Sunshine State on Wed., Nov. 28 at 7:30 pm The two schools will be meeting for the seventh time in school history in Columbia.

Carolina is 3-3 after going 1-2 at the Old Spice Classic with a fourth place finish. USC defeated Penn State 74-67 and then fell 63-61 to eventual champion NC State and 69-68 to George Mason. After playing Campbell South Carolina hits the road for its next two games – playing at Clemson on Sat., Dec. 1 (4 pm on FSN) and then in Philadelphia on Thurs., Dec. 6 (7 pm on ESPN) as part of the Pizza Hut SEC-Big East Challenge. The Tigers are ranked No. 18 in the country this week and are 5-0 on the season heading into their game on Tuesday night against Purdue. Providence is 3-1 heading into its matchup on Tuesday night against Maine.

South Carolina has three players averaging double figures: Devan Downey (17.7), Zam Fredrick (15.3) and Dominique Archie (10.5). Freshmen Mike Holmes leads the Gamecock charge on the boards, grabbing 8.0 rpg including a career-high 16 vs. N.C. State. Freshmen Sam Muldrow is next on the list with 6.3 and Archie is third with 5.5. Downey leads the team with 5.2 apg and 3.2 spg.

Campbell is 2-3 after defeating Radford on Sat., Nov. 24 87-70 behind the double-double of Jonathan Rodriguez (22 pt, 10 reb.). Reggie Bishop also added 23 points for the Fighting Camels.

South Carolina and Campbell have played six times with USC winning five of the match-ups including the last one: 77-48 on Nov. 29, 2003 in Columbia. USC is 23-6 vs. the Atlantic 10 this season.

The Atlantic 10 is the current media darling as it has seen Belmont (at Alabama), Gardner-Webb (at Kentucky) and Mercer (at No. 22 Southern California) pick up some big wins this season already.

Quickly Catching You Up

The Gamecocks are 3-3 after their first six games of the season. Carolina defeated South Carolina State, The Citadel and Penn State while dropping games against Southern California, N.C. State, and George Mason. Carolina dropped the game to the Trojans by 10 points and came up short against NC State (two points) and George Mason (one point). Southern California, N.C. State, and George Mason are a combined 14-3 on the season with N.C. State defeating No. 19 Villanova to win the Old Spice Classic and the Trojans crushing No. 18 Southern Illinois to win the Anaheim Classic.

Real Deal on the Glass?

Freshman Mike Holmes might be all he was advertised coming to South Carolina from Lee Central with the tag of Mr. Basketball 2007.

Holmes grabbed 35 rebounds in the three games at the Old Spice Classic last week – including 15 off the offensive glass. In addition to his outstanding rebounding performance, the freshman also scored 31 points in the three contests. Right on the verge, he was one point away in two contests from a double-double while in the other he was one rebound shy of a double-double. He leads the team with 8.0 rpg and is fourth on the team with 9.8 ppg.

Gamecocks Celebrate 100 Years of Basketball

During the 2007-08 season selected “Gamecock Greats” will be recognized at every home game (see first page for Southern California Gamecock Greats). Fans will have an opportunity to vote on an All-Decade team and an All-Century team.

The year-long celebration will culminate Feb. 22-23 with a very special weekend celebration that will create new memories. In addition to USC’s game against Mississippi State on Sat., Feb. 23, the weekend will feature a former players reunion, an alumni game, an autograph session and a lettermen’s banquet with great food and old stories that will stir the hearts of everyone.

Diaper Dandies

Carolina has started three sophomores, a freshman and a senior every game this season. Freshman Mike Holmes has started two and freshman Sam Muldrow has started four games – including the last three. South Carolina has seven newcomers on its roster this season, including three transfers and two walk-ons.

Carolina started at least two freshmen in 21 of 30 games last season. USC started three freshman against No. 25 Kentucky on Jan. 16, 2007 in Columbia.
