MANHATTAN, Kan. – The South Carolina equestrian team fell to undefeated Kansas State 13-7 Sunday at Fox Creek Farm despite a strong showing form the Hunter Seat team. Carolina’s Hunter Seat team won 6-4 and was led by equitation over fences MVP Megan Massaro, but the Western team dropped a tough 9-1 decision to give the Wildcats the overall win.
“As a whole we rode better today than yesterday,” head coach Boo Duncan said. “That was definitely reflected on the Hunter Seat side. We rode better than yesterday in Western and had less mistakes, but unfortunately that’s how it goes sometimes.”
The loss marks the first time the Gamecocks have dropped back-to-back competitions since September 2004. The Gamecocks went on to win their first national championship that season.
“It was a good experience to come out and ride in a different part of the country where we’ve never been before,” Duncan said. “We’re definitely looking forward to working hard and preparing for Georgia next weekend.”
After falling 1-9 in the Hunter Seat division against Oklahoma State Saturday, the Gamecocks came out with big wins Sunday, winning equitation over fences 3-2 and equitation on the flat 3-2. Massaro, Kristen Terebesi and Elanor Kunsman all recorded victories over fences with Massaro’s 80-76 win earning her MVP honors. Kunsman improved to 2-1 on the season with her victory while Terebesi improves to at 4-1.
Alex Haskell, Carly Babcock and Sarah Stephens recorded points in equitation on the flat. Haskell defeated Jenny Giraldin, 77-72, followed by Babcock with a 77-68 victory. Both teams were tied at two points each before Stephens recorded an 80-78 win against Katie Mellon to give the Gamecocks the victory.
It was a difficult day for the Western team as Amy Biffle’s 72.5-72 win in horsemanship was the only point recorded by the Gamecocks. Katy Biffle and Katie Grossnickle both fell by only 0.5 points in close rides. The tension remained in reining as all five rides were decided by two points or less, but the Wildcats were able to edge out all five rides for the sweep.
The Gamecocks are now 2-3 on the season and hold a 3-2 record in the Hunter Seat and 1-4 record in the Western division. Carolina returns to One Wood Farm for the fall season finale when they host Georgia Saturday at 10 a.m.
