Freshman Ashley Evens claimed the top spot for the Gamecocks for the first time this season at the 2007 SEC Cross Country Championship Saturday morning.

The Gamecocks were up against nationally ranked teams including Arkansas (13), Florida (27) and Georgia (29). South Carolina finished 11th with 290 points.

Evens, the top runner for the Gamecocks, finished 55th with a time of 22:57, while senior Rebecca Chain followed closely with a 56th place finish. Evens and Chain have been the top two runners for the Gamecocks in every race this season.

Junior Callie Rabun was third for South Carolina finishing 69th, while junior Kelsey Bristol and freshman Tara Tae also put points on the board for the Gamecocks. Junior Megan Robers and freshman Cassity Brewer rounded out the scoring for South Carolina.

Arkansas claimed the team title with 39 points, while Sarah Madebach took the individual medalist honors finishing with a time of 20:49. Complete results are available at www.secsports.com.

The Gamecocks will spend the next two weeks preparing for the NCAA Southeast Regional on Sat., Nov. 10 in Louisville, Ky.
