COLUMBIA, S.C. — Laura Armstrong from the women’s soccer team has been named AgSouth Athlete of the Week. Armstrong was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week late Sunday night.
Armstrong recorded two shutout victories this past weekend to lead Carolina to its first 2-0 SEC weekend this season. She has given up only one goal in her last 630+ minutes played. After surrendering two late goals in her season debut vs. ETSU on Sept. 3, Armstrong has only allowed one goal since a shot by Vanderbilt with nine second remaining in double-overtime (Oct. 7). Armstrong (5-1-0; 0.38 GAA) has recorded shutouts in all five of her wins, moving her to only two shutouts behind Elise Matthews (15) for first place on the all-time USC goaltending list. Armstrong currently leads the conference with a 0.20 goals against average in SEC play.
Her shutout versus Alabama marked the ninth of the season for the team, tying the record set in 2002 and 2006 with four regular season games remaining. She then started Sunday and shutout No. 25 Auburn to lead the team to a school-record 10 shutouts on the season. It was only the fourth time in school history that a Gamecock goalkeeper has shutout a ranked SEC opponent.
