RICHMOND, Va. — The Gamecock volleyball team ran its record to 3-1 Friday evening thanks to a 3-0 (30-14, 30-27, 30-17) victory against Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond, Va. South Carolina continues play in the Third Degree Sportswear Invitational on Saturday taking on Maryland at 11:30 a.m. and George Washington at 4:30 p.m.
Hannah Lawing reached double figures in kills for the Gamecocks with 10 on 23 attacks, and she added 11 digs for her first career double-double. Dani Bedore and Belita Salters each had nine kills apiece for Carolina, and Salters notched a career-high with four solo blocks. Her total also tied for the second-most in school history for a three-game match. Sarah Cline led in digs with 15, and Jordan Bradosky had the first double-double of her career with 20 assists and 13 defensive saves. Petra Lorenzi had 16 assists and seven digs as well.
For the Rams, Elisa Kuehnel and Ivana Rich had seven kills to lead the squad, and Cat Juson was close behind with six. Juson had the most assists with 13 while adding eight digs. Laryssa Goncalves tied with Cline for the game-high in digs with 15.
Carolina dominated in nearly every statistical category, holding a 49-29 edge in kills and a 61-45 upper hand in digs. The Gamecocks’ nine service aces was triple the total of VCU, and their hitting percentage of .292 (49-14-12) was almost 250 points higher than the Ram’s figure (.050, 29-23-121). In the first game, South Carolina connected on its attacks at a 36.8 percent mark (18-4-38).
With South Carolina leading 16-12 in game one, Bedore got a kill off a feed from Bradosky to put her team on top by five. She served up consecutive aces to give the Gamecocks’ a 19-12 advantage and forced a Virginia Commonwealth timeout. Up 21-14, South Carolina ran off nine straight points, with Cline serving for eight of them and posting two aces and one kill along the way.
VCU bounced back in the second game and went ahead 15-10 following a kill by Rich. After a timeout, South Carolina went on a 7-1 run to snag a 17-16 lead. The frame was tied at 25-all before the Gamecocks strung together four points in a row. Bedore closed out the three-point win with a kill.
South Carolina wasted no time finishing off the Rams in game three, jumping out to a 10-2 lead that was capped by a Salters block against Mariel Frey. The lead swelled to double digits for the Gamecocks at 17-7 after Rich misfired on an attack. Carolina would go up by as many as 14 (29-15) before winning 30-17.
