COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina head coach Mark Berson announced Monday that Tyler Ruthven will join Gamecock men’s soccer team for the 2007 season. Ruthven, a defender, transfers to Carolina from the University of San Francisco, where he played in all 19 matches and started 10 times in 2006. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

“We are very pleased to have Tyler joining our team for next year,” Berson said. “He is an excellent defender who has a year of college experience under his belt. He will strengthen our back line with his size, athleticism and his experience.”

The 6-2, 182-pound defender is originally from Alpharetta, Ga., and graduated from Milton High School in 2006 where he was a two-time team captain. Ruthven played club soccer for the Concorde Fire Elite with fellow Gamecock sophomores Mario Burstein and Cory Lewis. His father, Dick Ruthven, pitched in the Major Leagues.
