COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina seniors Erin Sullivan and Annie Galloway and sophomore Blakely Mattern have all been named to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District (III) team as announced on Thursday (Nov. 1). Sullivan and Mattern were both first team selections and Galloway earned third team honors. Sullivan and Mattern will now be considered for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced later in November.
Mattern (Simpsonville, S.C./JL Mann HS) has maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average through her first semesters at Carolina. She has been a member of the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll and is currently pursuing a degree in business administration. Mattern, a 2006 Freshman All-America selection (Soccer Buzz) and second team All-SEC selection, has started every game of her Gamecock career and has one goal and two assists on the season. She anchors the Carolina defense that leads the SEC with 11 shutouts and has 0.60 goals against average.
Sullivan (Augusta, Ga./Aquinas HS) has started every game this season for the Gamecocks and ranks in the top 10 in the conference in points (19), goals (seven), assists (five), shots on goal (23) and game-winning goals (three). An advertising major and three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection, Sullivan boasts a 3.83 grade point average and is currently 12th on the all-time USC scoring list with 30 career points. She is only the fourth player in school history to record a hat trick and hit the game-winning goal to defeat then-No. 1 North Carolina in the 2007 season opener.
Galloway (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg HS) earned her second CoSIDA Academic All-District team selection after making first team honors last season. She boasts a 3.93 grade point average while pursuing a degree in biology and was a second team Academic All-America selection in 2006. Galloway has played in 17 games this season and was tied for fourth on the team with two goals before an ankle injury against Alabama ended her regular season prematurely. She is a six-time President’s List member at South Carolina.
