COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s soccer team (6-5-3, 1-4-1) lost a tight battle in Athens, Ga. Friday evening to the Georgia Bulldogs, 1-0. All four of South Carolina’s losses in SEC play have been 1-0 defeats.
“They came out playing hard and played a good game,” said USC Head Coach Shelley Smith. “They didn’t have too many chances and I think we finally started to play well in the second half. We just didn’t put it together offensively.”
Georgia’s lone goal came at the 65th minute, when Nicole Greathead scored off a deflection for the game-winning goal. South Carolina junior goalkeeper Elise Matthews recorded seven saves for the Gamecocks in this evening’s loss.
Senior co-captain defender Lydia Bienias left the game in the first half with an ankle injury. South Carolina will be back in action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at No. 25 Tennessee.
“Our game against Tennessee will be a challenge and it will be very competitive,” said Coach Smith. “It will be a big match for our team.”
