STORRS, Conn. – The No. 15 South Carolina men’s soccer team suffered its second loss of the season on Saturday, falling to South Florida, 2-0, in its final game at the UConn adidas Classic. Carolina falls to 2-2 for the year with the loss, while the Bulls improve to 4-0.
“Despite the loss, our team took some big steps forward tonight,” Carolina head coach Mark Berson said. “We had a number of opportunities to tie, which was disappointing, but we really did see a great effort out of our team. We need to head back to Columbia, work hard and prepare ourselves for Wofford this Tuesday.”
The Gamecocks seemingly dominated at the net, managing 13 shots against just seven by the USF offense. Freshman forward Blake Brettschneider led Carolina with three shots, including two on goal, while senior midfielder J.D. Moon chipped in two shots, both on the net.
Carolina’s freshman goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer tallied two saves, while Bulls keeper, Diego Restrepo, earned seven saves in the victory.
The Bulls struck early in the first half when Simon Shoendorf scored the game winner on an assist from Jordan Seabrook in the third minute for a 1-0 lead. Carolina failed to answer, and USF’s Tony Taylor scored on an unassisted goal in the 35th minute, extending the lead to 2-0.
South Florida held strong in the second half, protecting its lead as Restrepo saved three Carolina shots on goal, and the Gamecocks failed to capitalize on two corners in the half.
The Gamecocks return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Wofford College in a 7 p.m. contest at Stone Stadium.
