COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina senior goalkeeper Lindsay Thorstenson picked up another honor following her performance last weekend, earning a spot on the Soccer Buzz Team of the Week.
Thorstenson has also been named the Soccer America and NSCAA National Player of the Week, in addition to being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week. It is the first time that a Gamecock has earned a national Player of the Week honor.
Against the then-No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels, Thorstenson grabbed six saves to become the first goalkeeper to shutout North Carolina in a span of 57 games. The Gamecocks (2-0) became the first team to defeat the Tar Heels in a home opener.
South Carolina also earned a fourth national ranking, jumping to No. 19 in the Soccer Times poll released Wednesday. The Gamecocks, unranked in the preseason polls, enter this week No. 13 (Soccer America), No. 21 (Soccer Buzz) and No. 22 (NSCAA/adidas coaches poll). The rankings are the highest ever in each poll for the Gamecocks.
