Columbia, S.C. – The South Carolina women’s basketball team set a new school record by placing 10 of its student-athletes on the Southeastern Conference Winter Sports Academic Honor Roll this year, surpassing the previous team record of nine set last year. Carolina’s total of 10 players on the SEC Honor Roll this year ranks as the second-highest total ever for any SEC basketball team, either men’s or women’s. No other SEC women’s basketball team placed more than six of its players on the SEC Honor Roll this year.
The 2006-07 SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2006 Spring, Summer and Fall terms, with student-athletes needing to post a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher to qualify.
South Carolina’s representatives on the squad included a pair of first-time honorees in Stacy Booker (tech support/training management) and Demetress Adams (psychology), a pair of two-time honorees in Ilona Burgrova (exercise science) and Brionna Dickerson (business), a three-time honoree in Lakesha Tolliver (sport and entertainment management) and five four-time honorees in Lea Fabbri (math), Shannel Harris (business), Larissa Kulcsar (international business), Lauren Simms (exercise science) and Iva Sliskovic (international studies).
“We are very proud of what the players on this team have achieved in the classroom,” Head Coach Susan Walvius said. “They have found the balance of being students and being athletes and that is very important to us. Our academic advisor Earleen Michels deserves credit as well. The fact that we have had back-to-back winning seasons and trips to the postseason the last two years and have put more players on the SEC Academic Honor Roll than anyone else during that same time speaks to the character of the young ladies we have in our program. It makes us very happy to see them achieve at this kind of level both on and off the court.”
