A record 13 of the University of South Carolina’s 17 athletic programs posted a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better for the Fall 2006 semester, it was announced today. It marked the third straight semester that at least a dozen of the athletics programs exceeded the 3.0 GPA plateau.
“This is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Athletics Director Eric Hyman. “I appreciate the hard work of the student-athletes and recognize the commitment of our coaches and support staff in making academics a priority and contributing to our success in the classroom.”
For the seventh consecutive semester, the women’s golf team led the way with a team GPA of 3.667. Both the softball team (3.565) and volleyball team (3.391) posted its highest team GPA on record. The overall mean GPA of USC’s 474 student-athletes was 2.982, the second highest on record, just short of the Spring 2006 record of 2.992.
Forty-five student-athletes were named to the President’s List, which honors students with a perfect 4.0 GPA, while 125 student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List.
The mean Fall GPA for the 203 female student-athletes was 3.342, while the 271 men combined for a 2.713 GPA. The overall GPA for the entire USC student body of 17,741 students was 3.111.
