ABOUT THE WEEK
SETTING THE SCENE: The South Carolina volleyball team (14-15, 7-11 SEC) will look for a season sweep of Georgia (6-22, 2-16 SEC) when it hosts the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Volleyball Competition Facility. The Gamecocks then wrap up Southeastern Conference play in Tuscaloosa, Ala., when they play the Alabama Crimson Tide (15-12, 10-8 SEC) at 8 p.m. Friday.
ABOUT GEORGIA: Georgia currently resides in last place in the SEC Eastern Division and in the overall standings. The Bulldogs’ two wins in conference play came against Mississippi State and Auburn in October. UGA enters Wednesday’s contest having lost seven in a row, including a pair of 3-0 defeats at the hands of Kentucky and Tennessee last weekend. Maria Taylor leads Georgia with 4.48 kills, 2.53 digs and 0.78 blocks per game while hitting .215.
ABOUT ALABAMA: Alabama is second in the SEC Western Division behind LSU, which clinched the division last weekend. The Crimson Tide have lost three in a row and six of eight after starting the year with a 13-6 overall record and an 8-2 SEC mark. Alabama was swept at LSU and Arkansas over the past weekend. Crystal Hudson leads the Tide’s offense with an even 4.00 kills per game and a .396 hitting percentage. Setter Brigitte Slack averages 11.60 assists and 2.25 digs per game.
THE GEORGIA SERIES: South Carolina broke a six-match losing streak to Georgia when it defeated the Bulldogs earlier this season. Overall, Georgia still leads the all-time series by a 38-13 margin. The Bulldogs stole a 3-2 decision from the Gamecocks last year when they visited the Palmetto State.
THE ALABAMA SERIES: Alabama won in five games against South Carolina earlier this year after dropping the first two games. The Crimson Tide lead the series 16-12 over the Gamecocks and have won six of the past seven matches between the two schools. USC lost 3-0 at Alabama last season.
