The South Carolina men’s golf team is set to open the 2006-07 this weekend at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, played at The Farm Golf Club (6.906 yards — Par 72) in Rocky Face, Ga. The tournament, which is hosted by Georgia Tech, begins on Friday, Sept. 15 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 17. Eighteen holes will be played each day and live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.

Head coach Puggy Blackmon’s five-man lineup for the event will include junior Warren Thomas, sophomores Florian Fritsch and Allen Koon and true freshmen George Bryan IV and Patrick Rada will make their collegiate debuts.

Thomas has played in 11 tournaments over the last two seasons, including the 2006 NCAA Championship. Koon was also in the lineup for the NCAA Championship in 2006 and competed in 10 events for the Gamecocks as a true freshman. Fritsch competed in 12 of 13 events and earned second-team All-SEC honors last season. He was the Gamecocks’ leading finisher six times, including a top 25 showing at NCAAs. The Wiesloch, Germany native is currently ranked No. 8 among European Amatuer golfers.

Bryan and Rada are coming off highly successful high school careers that saw them finished ranked first and second, respectively, in the South Carolina Junior Golf Rankings in 2005.

The field for the Carpet Capital Collegiate is comprised of South Carolina, Clemson, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, NC State, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Vanderbilt, Augusta State, Texas Tech, Texas, TCU, Georgia State and East Tennessee State.

Eight golfers return from the 2005-06 team, which played in NCAA Regionals for the 11th straight year and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the 14th time in school history.
