In the opening match of the adidas-Gameock Classic, Winthrop scored in the 71st minute and held on for a 1-0 victory over Alabama A&M on Friday evening at Stone Stadium.

The Eagles converted their goal on a set piece. Will Nova’s corner kick found Henry Kalungi’s head and he stuck the ball in the back of the net.

Winthrop won the shots battle, taking 13 attempts to 11 for Alabama A&M. The Eagles took six corner kicks and gave up just two to the Bulldogs.

Bulldog goalkeeper Paul Musoke gave a strong effort in goal, finishing with six saves. Patrick Mitrovich made four stops for the Eagles.

Winthrop improved to 4-1-0 while the Alabama A&M slipped to 1-4-0. The Eagles will wrap up play in the adidas-Gamecock Classic on Sunday at Noon when they face Temple. The Bulldogs and the Gamecocks will meet in the final game of the Classic at 2:30 p.m.
