University of South Carolina senior soccer player Mike Sambursky (Katy, Texas) has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced on Monday. Sambursky helped the Gamecocks to a 2-0 record last week, extending their win streak to a nation’s best eight games.
Sambursky scored a goal and registered two assists as the Gamecocks defeated NC State, 3-2, on Wednesday and then knocked off No. 15 Memphis in its Conference USA opener on Sunday, 2-1, in overtime. Against the Wolfpack, Sambursky collected an assist and in the Gamecocks’ win over the Tigers, the co-captain scored a beautiful goal from 30 yards out and set up the game-winner in overtime. Sambursky has scored at least one point in every South Carolina match this season. He leads the Gamecocks with 18 points on five goals and eight assists.
This is the third time Sambursky has been selected C-USA Offfensive Player of the Week. He also earned the honor on Sept. 11, 2006 and on Nov. 7, 2005.
South Carolina (8-1-0) will look for its ninth straight win on Wednesday when it faces UAB (5-3-1) in Columbia at Stone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be nationally televised tape delayed on College Sports Television. The first 400 fans to arrive at Wednesday’s match will receive a free South Carolina Soccer scarf, courtesy of adidas. The Carolina-UAB match will first air on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 8:30 p.m. ET.
