COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 21st-ranked University of South Carolina women’s golf, fresh off a stellar performance in capturing the 2002 Southeastern Conference Championship, heads to Baton Rouge, La., and the 2002 NCAA East Regional. Play runs Thursday-Saturday (May 9-11) at the Louisiana State University Golf Course, which plays to a par 72 at 6,265 yards.

This will be the Lady Gamecocks’ second appearance at the LSU Golf Course in a month as Carolina finished third of 13 teams in the LSU/Cleveland Classic, Apr. 5-7. Lady Gamecock junior Kristy McPherson and sophomore Adrienne Gautreaux led the way for USC, tying for fifth place individually.

Since NCAA Women’s Golf regionals began in 1994, the Lady Gamecocks now have appeared in eight of nine regional classics, including the last four. In four of the previous seven regionals, USC qualified for the NCAA Championships (Carolina also played in the 1987 and 1993 NCAAs prior to regional competition). Carolina’s best regional finish was fourth in the 1995 tournament at Quail Ridge Country Club in Memphis, Tenn., as USC’s Siew Ai Lim captured medalist honors. Last year, Carolina finished sixth in Chapel Hill, N.C., and qualified for the nationals.
