Columbia, S.C. –
Day two of the 2005 Wachovia Junior Hardcourt Championships was put on hold until early afternoon because of off and on rain showers in the Columbia area on Sunday. Play resumed for the boys and girls 12, and older age divisions around 3 p.m. on Sunday when the weather cleared.

While the 12 and up competitors waited on the weather to clear, the boys and girls in the 10 year old age division continued their play at the USC Indoor Tennis Facility. Top-seeded Austin Heinz defeated Davis Craig 6-0,6-1 to advance to the boys 10 singles quarterfinal to play Ryo Yoshimura of Greenwood. Yoshimura, the fifth seed, advanced with a 6-1,6-1 victory over Merritt Wilburn. The two top seeds in the girls 10 advanced with straight set victories in each of their matches. Katherine Lee defeated MariClare Martin 6-0,6-0 while the second seeded Katie Tiller advanced with a 6-1,6-0 victory against Lillian Saul.

In the boys 18 singles, Luke Whiteside of Columbia knocked off the fifth seeded Benjamin McFarland with a three set victory. Whiteside dropped the first set 6-3 to bounce back to take the next two sets 6-2, and 7-6(10). The win advanced Whiteside to face the boys 18 singles top seed Caleb Barnes of Irmo at 8am at the Sam Daniels Tennis Facility.

The Boys and Girls doubles matches for the 12, and older age divisions will be moved to Monday because of the weather delay. All play will resume tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. at the four sites that are all located on the University of South Carolina campus: Sam Daniel Tennis Facility (Boys and Girls 18), the Columbia Tennis Center (Boys and Girls 14 and 16), Maxcy Gregg (Boy and Girls 12), USC Indoor Tennis Facility (Boys and Girls 10).
