The 25th-ranked University of South Carolina women’s golf team heads to Athens, Ga., to compete this weekend in the 22nd edition of the SEC Women’s Gofl Championships at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The Lady Gamecocks are looking to build on a strong spring season and are searching for the first women’s golf league title in Carolina’s 11-year SEC history. Last year, Carolina finished third in the event in Gainesville, Fla.

Junior All-America Kristy McPherson is looking to repeat as the Southeastern Conference champion after an unbelieveable run in last year’s event. McPherson shattered records and left the field behind, never leading by fewer than two strokes after the first round. She finished with a nine-under 207 score, setting the record for the lowest three-round total in SEC history and shattering the USC versus par record of three-under held by Siew Ai Lim.

McPherson, who set another school record with a five-under 67 in the first round, is the second South Carolina golfer ever to earn medalist honors. Men’s golfer Eric Ecker captured the 1998 title in Athens, Ga.
