The South Carolina women’s golf team shot a 302 Monday and stands in a tie for eigth place after one round at the Spartan Invitational at San Jose State University. The Lady Gamecocks are just two strokes back of the top five and 13 back from the lead. California is leading by five strokes with a score of 289, and their own Ria Quiazon leads the individual competition by three shots, firing a round of four-under 68.

South Carolina defending SEC Champion and All-American Kristy McPherson lived up to her expectations by firing a one-under 71 on Friday and is tied for second place. McPherson had four birdies on the day and was only one stroke over her season best. Classmate Kacy Thompson was next in line for the Lady Gamecocks with a four-over 76, and is tied for 33rd place.

The rest of the Lady Gamecocks are close behind begining with senior Reetta Laakkonen who is tied for 43rd place with a five-over 77. Sophomore Marci Robinson is tied for 47th place with a six-over 78, while classmate Adrienne Gautreaux fired a seven-over 79 and is tied for 52nd place.

California holds a five stroke lead over Pepperdine, who fired a 294. Oklahoma State stands in third place with a 297, followed by New Mexico State with a score of 299. Rounding out the top five in the team competition is Texas who fired a 300.

In the individual competition, Ria Quiazon of California holds a lead of three strokes over Kristy McPherson of South Carolina, Becky Lucidi of Southern California, and Anna Temple also of California who is playing for individual honors only. Four players round out the top five with a score of even-par 72: Rachel Bailey of New Mexico State, Lindsey Wright of Pepperdine, Sarah Huarte of California, and Rachel Kyono of Pepperdine.
