Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina men’s basketball team tipped off the season on Monday night in an 81-63 exhibition win against USC Upstate. The win improved USC to 34-6 overall in exhibition games. The Gamecocks had three players score in double figures and had nine of the 10 players who saw action score.
The Gamecocks jumped out to an early lead 11-3 lead but Upstate would cut it down to two at 13-11 with 12:03 remaining in the first half but that would be as close as they would get as the Gamecocks ended the half on a 35-20 run to take a 48-31 lead into the half. In the final stanza, USC outscored Upstate 33-32 to take a 81-63 win.
Carolina used fast break points to key the way as they outscored Upstate 21-0 in that category as well as shooting (24-29) 82.8% from the free throw line. USC was led by Carlos Powell who had 21 points, and eight rebounds. Tarence Kinsey tallied 18 while Josh Gonner totaled 15.
