South Carolina vs. Winthrop, Nov. 24, 2004
Dave Odom, South Carolina — “We were pleased to get the win. It was more difficult than it might have been. Winthrop is a well-coached team that has already played a lot of games. They certainly disappoint with their quality of play. It might have been better for the game to end the way it did. If we had kept the lead (17), we wouldn’t have had to dig down deep. Hopefully, this experience will be valuable for us down the stretch. We made some glaring turnovers. Our offense didn’t get into a good rhythm like we wanted it to. Probably, the thing that pleased me the most was how we stood up the last 3-4 minutes. Brandon Wallace got some big rebounds and hit a couple of big baskets at the end. I didn’t like the way we lost the lead; but I was encouraged with how we responded towards the end. We will spend a lot of time over the next couple of days working against the zone defense.”
Gregg Marshall, Winthrop — “It’s an honor to play in this arena against a SEC team and against a former National Coach of theYear. We’re disappointed and felt we had a chance to win. We had several opportunities but could not make the play. Give them credit to not allow us to play on top in the last few minutes because had we gone on top, you never know what would have happened. We knew they had good shooters. We didn’t have a lot of tape but we wanted to mix up our zones. Our extended zone was effective against them. Defense can provide flow and rhythm. We took a step tonight We played 10 minutes in the first half and a good second half. We can’t play 30 minutes and expect to win against a team like South Carolina.”
