Columbia, S.C. –
A rain delay stopped play in the 2004 Wachovia Junior Hardcourt Championships for an hour and a half but the sun broke through in the Columbia area and allowed all of the top-seeds to advance in the girls’ tournaments.

In the Girls’ 16 tournament, top-seeded Allison Stanford battled back after losing the first set to defeat Katie Daniel 0-6, 6-1, 6-1. Stanford, of Pawleys Island, will face Andie Keyser-Baker in the quarterfinals tomorrow at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Courts at 10 a.m. Keyser Baker, of Taylors, defeated Camden native Lindsey Kelly 6-2, 6-1. In other Girls’ 16 action, second-seeded Elizabeth Appleby advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kathleen Henry. Appleby will face Kensley Mincey at 11 a.m.

In the Boys’ 18 tournament, Chris Peek of Lexington defeated Columbia’s Sean Junis 6,0, 6-3 to advance. Peek, the tournament’s top-seed, will return to the courts at 2:30 p.m. at the Columbia Tennis Center and face West Columbia’s Ben McFarland. The third-seeded McFarland defeated Andrew Lee 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Doubles play began Saturday with the tandem of Henry Oelsmer and Joseph Howell defeating top-seeded Alan Pearce and Alan Thomas 8-5 to advance to the semifinal round of the Boys’ 10 tournament.

The top-seed in the Girls’ 14 tournament also fell when Betsy and Molly McDonald lost a heartbreaking 9-8(5) match against Kathryn Cox and Samantha McKenzie. The second-seeded duo of Megan Jones and Nikki Miller also were ousted from the tournament with a loss to Beth Cotter and Lauren Teague, both of Columbia, by a final score of 8-3.

Play resumes Sunday at 8 a.m. with action taking place at four sites – the Columbia Tennis Center, Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center, USC Indoor Tennis Courts, and Sam Daniel Tennis Center.
